by MatthewCheap European Removalshow much removals should cost
In our ongoing quest to help you find the most cost-effective solutions for your move, we’re expanding our search for affordable moving boxes. While our previous post explored options from major retailers and specialized removal box suppliers, this time we’re turning our attention to some alternative sources. Whether you’re relocating within the UK or moving to Spain, finding the right boxes at the right price can significantly impact your moving budget.
In this follow-up article, we’ll be examining the moving box offerings from three diverse suppliers:
- IKEA, a well-known furniture giant that also caters to moving needs;
- cardboardboxes.co.uk, an online specialist in packaging materials;
- and directglobaltradingboxes.co.uk, a direct-to-consumer box supplier.
We’ll break down their offerings, compare prices, and calculate the best value in terms of cubic meters per pound spent, helping you make an informed decision for your upcoming move.
Ikea – DUNDERGUBBE Moving box, brown, 64x34x40 cm/80
In the case of Ikea, we can’t suggest any “moving boxes kit” as Ikea don’t offer any bundles or kits. It is not a disadvantage as we are not forced to “overbuy” – we can purchase specific numbers of boxes for our requirements.
Let’s do a little bit of boring math, but the better we are prepared – the more we can save – btw Moving to Europe with MyCheapRemovals WILL save you a lot.
Box Dimensions
Given box dimensions:
- Length: 64 cm = 0.64 meters
- Width: 34 cm = 0.34 meters
- Height: 40 cm = 0.40 meters
Volume of One Box
Using the formula for the volume of a box:
Volume = Length × Width × Height
Volume of one box = 0.64 m × 0.34 m × 0.40 m ≈ 0.08704 cubic meters
Total Volume for 20 Boxes
To find the total volume for 20 boxes:
Total volume of 20 boxes = Volume of one box × 20
Total volume of 20 boxes = 0.08704 cubic meters × 20 ≈ 1.7408 cubic meters
Cost Calculation
Given the cost for one box is £3:
Cost for 20 boxes = 20 × £3 = £60
Cost Per Cubic Meter
To find the cost per cubic meter:
Cost per cubic meter = Cost for 20 boxes / Total volume of 20 boxes
Cost per cubic meter = £60 / 1.7408 cubic meters ≈ £34.51 per cubic meter
Summary
- Volume of one box: Approximately 0.08704 cubic meters
- Total volume for 20 boxes: Approximately 1.7408 cubic meters
- Cost for 20 boxes: £60
- Cost per cubic meter: Approximately £34.51
This analysis shows that while the IKEA boxes are affordable at £3 each, the cost per cubic meter is higher compared to the previous examples (namely B&Q moving boxes), indicating that the value proposition may differ based on your specific needs.
Ikea also offers the DUNDERGUBBE box priced at £2 and dimensions of 50x31x40 cm, the volume of one box is approximately 0.062 cubic meters. When compared to the larger DUNDERGUBBE box (0.08704 cubic meters at £3), the cost per cubic meter for the smaller box is approximately £32.26, which is slightly more cost-efficient than the larger box’s £34.51 per cubic meter. However, the larger box still provides more overall storage space, making it the better option for maximizing volume when fewer boxes are preferred.

The volume of Each Box
Using the formula for the volume of a box:
- The volume of one Brown Single Wall Box:
Volume = Length × Width × Height
Volume = 0.152m × 0.152m × 0.152m ≈ 0.0035 cubic meters - The volume of one White Reinforced Single Wall Box:
Volume = 0.47m × 0.235m × 0.25m ≈ 0.0277 cubic meters
Total Volume for 20 Boxes
To find the total volume of each type of box:
- The total volume of 10 Brown single-wall boxes:
0.0035 cubic meters × 10 ≈ 0.035 cubic meters - The total volume of 10 White Reinforced Single Wall Boxes:
0.0277 cubic meters × 10 ≈ 0.277 cubic meters - Total volume for all 20 boxes:
0.035 cubic meters + 0.277 cubic meters = 0.312 cubic meters
Cost Calculation
Given the kit price of £14.15 (excluding VAT):
- Cost per cubic meter:
Cost per cubic meter = £14.15 / 0.312 cubic meters ≈ £45.36 per cubic meter
Summary
- Total volume for 10 Brown Single Wall Boxes: Approximately 0.035 cubic meters
- Total volume for 10 White Reinforced Single Wall Boxes: Approximately 0.277 cubic meters
